Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)

Sustained  silent reading is an acronym for sustained silent reading. Sustained silent reading occurs often in elementary school and middle school settings, and in high school are beginning to embrace this practice. 

What do students read?
Students read what interests them. These can include books, magazines, newspapers, and even online materials!


 
How long do students read?
Ten to twenty minutes a day will assure that students are doing enough reading per day to get the positive effects of SSR.
. How do you assess SSR?
assessment is the hot button for sustained silent reading programs. My personal beliefs are that as long as students are reading the whole time, very little additional assessment is necessary.
Factors of Sustained Silent Reading
1.      Access book
2.      Appeal book
3.      Environment (providing a comfort situation)
4.      Encouragement to read (implementing various strategies to support student in reading.
5.      Non-accountability
6.      Distributive time to read (goal is to free reading as a habit)
7.      Follow up activities
8.      Staff training


Conclusion
This method is practical and can be used as the building knowledge of lesson. Students read what interests them. These can include books, magazines, newspapers, and even online materials. Students can read with Ten to twenty minutes a day will assure that students are doing enough reading per day to get the positive effects of SSR. assessment is the hot button for sustained silent reading programs. My personal beliefs are that as long as students are reading the whole time, very little additional assessment is necessary.
